Most U.S. cities would probably hope for a spot high atop any rankings issued by a respected business magazine. However, as the old saying goes, be careful what you wish for.
According to a recent study conducted by Bloomberg Businessweek and figures from the United States Census Bureau, the city of Denison, Texas, has the highest percentage of divorced residents in the entire country.
Specifically, it was determined that roughly 20 percent of all people over the age of 15 in the North Texas city are currently divorced.
This means that Denison – the birthplace of President Dwight Eisenhower – has a divorce rate that is almost double the national average.
While news of the report came as a shock to some residents, others were not so surprised.
According to Aaron and Jennifer Gage, a couple who relocated to Denison five years ago from New England, the high divorce rate became readily apparent when they attended a parenting class in the city.
“My husband and I both noted it and I said, ‘Wow. Do you realize we’re the only married couple in this class that hasn’t been divorced?’ And we tried to figure out why that was,” said Jennifer Gage.
While some believe the prolonged recession or high rate of marriage among young people may be the cause of the city’s high divorce rate, others ascribe it to a lack of recognition and an absent support system.
“Perhaps that’s one of the biggest issues, people who their marriage is struggling and they don’t think they’re supposed to talk about it,” said Pastor Mark Mitchell. “The dialogue has begun. What we have to do now is figure out how to address it.”
