In a few weeks, the Major League Baseball season will officially begin and fans will file through turnstiles across the nation for the next nine months in the hopes of catching a glimpse of their favorite team or player. Interestingly, not all recent baseball coverage has been spent covering the first pitch, but rather the impending divorce of one of the game’s all-time greats.
Pete Rose – otherwise known by his nickname “Charlie Hustle,” – filed for divorce from Carol, his second wife of almost 27 years, in a California court last week.
Rose, now 69, originally married his wife back in 1984. At the time the couple met, Rose was playing for the Cincinnati Reds and Carol was a cheerleader for the Philadelphia Eagles. The couple went on to have two children together.
In his divorce petition, Rose merely cites “irreconcilable differences” and provides no details as to the reasons for the divorce or a date of separation.
The court documents also indicated that Rose is prepared to pay spousal support but does not wish to cover his wife’s legal expenses. He is also seeking to recover his separate property – property acquired before the marriage – including both jewelry and baseball memorabilia.
Most baseball fans associate Rose with two very distinct stories. The first of these stories is of a highly competitive player who went on to accomplish a number of feats, including becoming Major League Baseball’s all-time leader in hits with 4,256. The second of these stories is of a player/manager who was permanently banned from baseball and ineligible for a place in the Hall of Fame due to accusations of betting on baseball games.
